"Media processing in Java" is an introduction to the concepts and methods used in temporal media processing. The focus lies on processing of audio and video content based on the Java programming language and the Java packages "Java Media Framework" (JMF, for desktop and streaming applications) and Mobile Media API (MMAPI, for mobile (e.g. UMTS) applications). Programming concepts (e.g. media abstraction, processing chains, synchronization) are explained by a large number of code examples. Especially, the book explains how media data can be captured with video cameras and microphones, transcoded with codecs, manipulated with effects and rendered to audiovisual devices and files. Additionally, streaming based on the Real-time Transfer Protocol (RTP, as it is used, for example, in the Darwin Streaming Server) through networks is explained. The JMF offers solutions for both sending and receiving of audio and video streams.

The book is intended to be a starting point for Java programmers with basic knowledge in software development. Readers of this book become able to understand and implement media-related software, like Adobe Premiere for video processing, the Windows Media Player or Steinberg Wavelab for audio processing. Additionally, they become able to implement their own effects for audio and video content.
